Insurance

Dr. Pinover accepts Aetna, Optum/United Healthcare (UHC), Medi-Cal, TriWest and Blue Shield of California insurance plans. Clients with HMO plans will not be able to use those benefits for his services. However, if you have a PPO plan, Dr. Pinover may be considered an out-of-network provider. PPOs typically reimburse a portion of the cost—often between 70% and 80%.

If you’re considering using your PPO insurance, it’s best to contact your provider in advance and ask:

  1. What is my out-of-network deductible for mental health services?
  2. What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed?

All clients are expected to pay the full session fee at the time of service. Dr. Pinover will provide a monthly statement (also known as a superbill) that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Dr. Pinover offers a complimentary 15-minute consultation for prospective clients. After this initial conversation, the fee is $200 for a 50-minute individual session. This may include clinical intake, psychotherapy, or caregiver support.

If the Fee Feels Out of Reach

Dr. Pinover offers a limited number of reduced-fee slots for individual therapy, caregiver education, and couples therapy. If you are interested in exploring a reduced rate, please mention it before your first session. When available, these lower-cost options are offered for a limited number of sessions. Fees may be adjusted upward if your financial circumstances change.

If a reduced-fee spot is not currently open, you may choose to be placed on a waitlist. Additional options—such as shorter or less frequent sessions—may also be considered, depending on your clinical needs. In some cases, Dr. Pinover may recommend a referral to another provider whose services better fit your budget.

Telehealth and Insurance Coverage

Pinover Psychology offers secure telehealth therapy sessions for clients located anywhere in California, in addition to in-person appointments in La Jolla. Many insurance plans now cover telehealth visits, though coverage can vary by plan and diagnosis. If you plan to use insurance for telehealth, it is best to confirm with your provider that your plan covers virtual psychotherapy with a licensed psychologist in California before your first session.

Therapy Services That May Be Covered

Depending on your insurance plan and clinical needs, coverage may extend to a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, chronic insomnia and CBT-I, addiction recovery, trauma, relationship stress, and life transitions.
